Don Bosco Kakuma Administration Block in Course

A recent inspection visit to Don Bosco Kakuma (DBK) on the 5th and 6th of September 2024 highlighted the remarkable progress of ongoing construction and agricultural projects at the centre. The delegation, consisting of Architect David, Quantity Survey Terry, Structural Engineer Sila and Service Engineer Wilson, conducted a thorough review of the developments on site.

One of the key outcomes was the inspection of 16 self-contained staff houses, financed by the Savio Lenten campaign. The construction of these houses was completed and the team confirmed that the structures met the required standards.

Additionally, the professionals reviewed the administration block and classrooms currently under construction, with funding provided by SlovakAid through Savio. The project is expected to be completed by November 2024. While the team expressed satisfaction with the quality of the work, they made a few recommendations to ensure the highest standards are maintained. These included applying waterproofing to the second-floor slab, installing additional windows to improve lighting in certain areas and reinforcing structural components for better stability.

The team also took time to reflect on the remarkable growth of Don Bosco Kakuma itself. What was once a rocky hill has now transformed into a flourishing educational centre in Turkana West, serving as a hub for learning and development in the region.

In addition to the construction projects, the delegation visited the Agricultural Project, which is spread on 14 acres of semi-arid land. This initiative, funded by Misean Cara and Don Bosco Switzerland (JuWe), trains young refugees in crop cultivation over a six-month period. The project has successfully transformed the once-barren land into a thriving agricultural space, significantly improving food security and providing valuable vocational training to the refugee community.

The inspection visit underscored the significant progress made in both construction and agricultural initiatives at Don Bosco Kakuma, reflecting a continued commitment to educational advancement and sustainable development in the region.
