DBDON Hosts Job Service Office Scaling Workshop

March 13, 2025, DBDON held a pivotal Job Service Office (JSO) Scaling Workshop at the Sarova Stanley Hotel, bringing together educators, industry experts, and government representatives to explore strategies for strengthening youth employment opportunities through TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training).

The workshop opened with remarks from Rev. Dr. Sahaya G. Selvam, Executive Director at DBDON, who emphasized the importance of building pathways that empower young people to thrive in the workforce. His presentation on Don Bosco Tech Kenya highlighted the progress made in technical training across the country and the evolving role of the JSO within this landscape.

A key focus of the workshop was the Dual Training Program, presented by Ms. Olivia Obiero of Swiss Contact Kenya, which showcased the integration of classroom learning with hands-on industry experience — a model designed to enhance the employability of TVET graduates.

The event also featured a presentation by Dr. Mercy Maina on Digital Job Search Clubs, which support young people in navigating online job markets and building essential career skills. Mr. Simon Mwangi from the Ministry of Labour, State Department for Labour and Skills Development, provided insights into government efforts to align training with industry demands.

One highlight was the session led by Mr. Ngui Muvenyi, National Job Service Officer at DBDON, who introduced the Job Service Officer’s Quality Manual. This manual outlines best practices and standards that guide JSOs at the provincial, national, and local levels, ensuring consistency and excellence in supporting graduates.

The day’s discussions were enriched by a panel featuring experts from across the employment ecosystem, including career counselling, human resources, youth development, and TVET policy. Panelists shared perspectives on bridging the gap between training and employment, emphasizing collaboration and innovation as key drivers for success.

In the afternoon, participants engaged in breakout sessions, where they brainstormed actionable strategies to enhance JSO functions within TVET institutions. These sessions emphasized the JSO’s dual role as both a careers guide and a vocations animator, reflecting its unique position within the Salesian educational framework.

The workshop concluded with commitments from TVET institutions and stakeholders to adopt and scale the best practices shared, reinforcing a shared vision of equipping young people with the skills, confidence, and networks they need to succeed.

This event underscored DBDON’s commitment to fostering inclusive and dynamic job service structures that meet the evolving needs of today’s youth. By strengthening the JSO at every level — provincial, national, and local — DBDON is paving the way for sustainable employment solutions and transformative education.
