DBDON Supports Makuyu Team as they Gear Up for Italy

May 13th, Thika. Through the SEED4Africa project, the Makuyu Team is making strides in transforming their innovative idea—Makuyu Aquaponics—from concept to reality. After clinching the top prize at a recent hackathon, the team is now preparing to represent Kenya at international competitions in Italy on July 1st.

In anticipation of this prestigious event, the Makuyu Team, guided by Irene Waweru from DBDON, embarked on a critical benchmarking visit to Exo Aquaponics in Thika. This visit aimed to deepen their understanding of aquaponics—an integrated system that combines aquaculture (raising fish) and hydroponics (growing plants without soil)—as they refine their project.

Aquaponics offers a sustainable solution to food security and environmental challenges by recycling water and nutrients, minimizing waste, and maximizing crop yields. For the Makuyu Team, this approach aligns perfectly with their vision to empower communities with innovative agricultural practices.

At Exo Aquaponics, the team learned firsthand about system design, water management, fish and plant care, and maintenance. They also explored how aquaponics can be scaled to meet community needs, from household gardens to larger community-based farms. The practical demonstrations and discussions inspired the team to think creatively about adapting aquaponics to their local context in Makuyu.

Guided by Irene Waweru’s mentorship, the team also explored ways to integrate aquaponics into educational initiatives—aligning with SEED4Africa’s broader mission to equip youth with skills that drive innovation and sustainable development.

SEED4Africa, a dynamic initiative supporting entrepreneurship and skills development across Africa, has been instrumental in fostering the Makuyu Team’s journey. By providing opportunities for mentorship, training, and international exposure, the project empowers young people to develop solutions to local challenges while connecting them to a global community of innovators.

As the Makuyu Team prepares for their journey to Italy, their experience at Exo Aquaponics has not only enriched their technical knowledge but also strengthened their resolve to make a meaningful impact through sustainable agriculture. Their story stands as a testament to what can be achieved when young minds are empowered with the right tools, guidance, and opportunities.
