DBDON Agriculture for Life Kenya Pilot Project

Agriculture for Life is an initiative of the Salesian Generalate in Rome aimed at supporting Don Bosco agricultural training and production units worldwide. The initiative is overseen by the Scuola Agraria Salesiana di Lombriasco in Turin, under the leadership of Mr Daniel Ormeno.

Mr Ormeno was in Nairobi, Kenya, from 19 to 23 January 2026 to hold a series of consultative meetings with Don Bosco Tech Africa (DBTA) and the Don Bosco Development Outreach Network (DBDON). The purpose of the visit was to plan a pilot project in Kenya under the Agriculture for Life initiative. The proposed pilot will integrate both training and production components in agriculture, in line with Salesian educational and development priorities.

The opening and closing meetings were attended by the Executive Directors of DBTA and DBDON, together with a core technical team comprising Mr Ngure Githinji (DBTA) and Ms Irene Waweru (DBDON), alongside Mr Ormeno. This marked Mr Ormeno’s second official visit to Kenya.

Ms Irene Waweru brings substantial experience in the coordination of agricultural projects within the Don Bosco Kenya network. She served as the Kenyan Lead for an Erasmus+ agriculture programme implemented during 2024–2025, coordinated by Seed4Africa. She is currently working as the Projects Officer for a Don Bosco avocado project operating in Kitale, Meru, and Makuyu. This initiative is funded by SlovakAID.

During the course of the week, the core team also conducted site visits to Embu and Makuyu to assess potential locations and operational conditions for the proposed pilot project.

What will follow is the operationalisation of the Pilot Project to be executed in Embu that will focus on upscaling avocado and macademia farming.

The project will focus on four pillars in its implementation: Training, Production, Social Impact, and Sustainability.

We believe this will set the trend for similar projects across the 44 countries where Salesians serve in Africa.
