DBDON 101 with Ministry of Education

Today, a high-level delegation led by Rev. Fr. Dr. Selvam, Executive Director at Don Bosco Development Office Nairobi (DBDON), and Mr. Michael Njeru, Project Officer at DBDON, paid a courtesy visit to the Ministry of Education.

They were joined by Margaret Chepngetich Kiprono, Curriculum Support Officer for Machakos, and Dr. Wilson Chelimo, Director of Test Development at the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC). Together, they met with the Principal Secretary for Basic Education, Prof. Julius Bitok, to discuss opportunities for collaboration on scaling the ProFuturo Digital Literacy Program across the country.

ProFuturo, a global initiative of Fundación Telefónica and Fundación “la Caixa”, is currently being implemented in Kenya by the Salesians of Don Bosco in partnership with the Catholic Diocese of Kitui. The program has already transformed learning in over 55 schools across Nairobi, Machakos, and Kitui, equipping more than 60,000 learners and 5,000 teachers with digital skills.

Through innovative digital classroom kits—including tablets, laptops, projectors, servers, and an offline Learning Management System—ProFuturo ensures access to quality digital education even in areas without internet connectivity. Its content is aligned with the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) and supported by comprehensive teacher training in modern pedagogy.

During the meeting, the delegation underscored the importance of strengthening Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) to complement government initiatives such as the Digital Literacy Programme (DLP) and accelerate the rollout of the Competency-Based Curriculum. The team also emphasized the need for supportive policies, including tax exemptions on the importation of ICT educational equipment, to ensure equitable access and scale impact nationwide.

Prof. Julius Bitok commended the initiative, noting its alignment with Kenya’s Vision 2030, the Digital Economy Blueprint, and the National Education Sector Strategic Plan (NESSP). He further expressed the ministry’s readiness to collaborate with partners who are committed to bridging the digital divide and ensuring that no child is left behind in the digital revolution.

This visit marks a significant step toward expanding the reach of ProFuturo in Kenya, reinforcing the shared vision of empowering learners and teachers through technology.
