Empowering Kenya’s Youth: The Character Coaches’ Training Program
In a world where young people face unprecedented challenges, the Positive Psychology Association of Kenya (PPAK) and Don Bosco Youth Ministry Kenya have joined forces to launch the transformative Character Coaches’ Training program. This initiative, rooted in positive psychology and the Salesian ethos of Don Bosco, aims to nurture young men and women into honest citizens and good Christians. By focusing on character development beyond mere life skills, the program empowers individuals to build resilient, value-driven lives that contribute to thriving communities across Kenya.
At its core, character is defined as the moral foundation of a person—the set of virtues that guide daily choices and enhance personal and communal well-being. Unlike life skills, which address adaptive behaviors for everyday challenges, character strengths are trait-like dispositions influenced by genetics and learning, fostering positive moral outcomes. The program distinguishes these, emphasizing virtues like spirituality, self-regulation, gratitude, wisdom, integrity, resilience, and more.
Character Coaches are exemplary adults over 21—teachers, counselors, pastors, youth workers, or mentors—who commit to guiding young people systematically. They facilitate Character Clubs, groups of 5 to 25 youth aged 12 to 30, meeting periodically in schools, churches, streets, or communities. These clubs focus on interactive sessions to instill virtues, promoting honest interactions and personal growth.
The training is delivered in three phases using participatory, play-way methods, supported by a set of three volumes of Character Coaches Manuals. Phase 1 covers foundational strengths like spirituality, love for learning, emotional intelligence, and passion. Phase 2 delves into forgiveness, creativity, leadership, and justice. Phase 3 advances to hope, sound judgment, hospitality, and work ethic. Accreditation progresses from Associate Character Coach (Level 1) through supervised training and club formation to full Accredited Character Coach status upon graduation and leading at least three clubs.
This program aligns seamlessly with the Don Bosco Development Outreach Network (DBDON)’s mission to uplift youth through education, empowerment, and holistic development. By envisioning flourishing individuals and communities, it echoes DBDON’s commitment to Salesian values, helping young people become agents of positive change in society.
DBDON proudly supports such initiatives, envisioning a Kenya where youth lead with integrity and compassion. To learn more or get involved, visit www.dbdon.org
