DBDON trains on Child Protection Policy

May 5th, 2025, Don Bosco Kakuma. In a world where children face increasing risks both online and offline, Don Bosco institutions have taken proactive steps to prioritize child protection and safeguarding across all their centers. Under the guidance of Estones Adebe and Irene Waweru, a comprehensive training program has been rolled out to equip staff and educators with the knowledge and skills necessary to create safe, supportive environments for young people.

The training program, which has reached all Don Bosco institutions including Kakuma in Turkana, addresses critical aspects of child protection: recognizing signs of abuse and neglect, implementing preventive measures, responding effectively to incidents, and fostering a culture of trust and respect. It aligns with international child safeguarding standards and local legal frameworks, ensuring that every staff member understands their role in upholding children’s rights and well-being.

Estones Adebe and Irene Waweru bring a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to child advocacy. Their sessions emphasize not only policy and procedures but also the human dimension—how to listen, how to empower, and how to build resilience in children who may have experienced trauma.

This training is particularly relevant in today’s context, where children are increasingly exposed to risks such as exploitation, cyberbullying, trafficking, and various forms of abuse. The digital age, while offering immense educational opportunities, also presents new threats that require educators and caregivers to be vigilant and responsive.

Don Bosco institutions, renowned for their commitment to holistic education and youth development, have always prioritized the safety and dignity of young people. By integrating child protection and safeguarding into every facet of their work—from classrooms to extracurricular activities—they are ensuring that no child is left vulnerable.

As Estones Adebe emphasized during the sessions,

“Safeguarding is not just a policy—it is a promise we make to every child who walks through our doors.”

This promise is rooted in the Don Bosco ethos of accompaniment and care, where every young person is seen, heard, and valued.

With the training now in place, Don Bosco institutions are better positioned to protect and empower children, giving them the confidence to learn, grow, and thrive in an environment that champions their rights and well-being.
