DBDON trains Seminarians on Financial Literacy

May 29, 2025. DBYES, Karen. In an initiative that underscores the holistic formation of future priests and brothers, Don Bosco Youth Educational Services (DBYES) hosted a financial training session led by Sr. Erica, John Mwaniki, and Rev. Fr. Dr. Sahaya Selvam—all from DBDON. The training aimed to equip seminarians with essential financial skills, reinforcing the belief that responsible stewardship is an integral part of religious life.

For aspiring priests and brothers, financial management is not merely about balancing budgets; it is about ensuring that the resources entrusted to them by communities and congregations are used effectively and ethically. The session covered topics such as budgeting, planning, record-keeping, and accountability—skills that are crucial in managing parish projects, community initiatives, and educational institutions.

In today’s world, where transparency and accountability are paramount, religious leaders are often called upon to oversee projects and finances that directly impact the lives of those they serve. A solid grounding in financial management helps ensure that every contribution—whether it comes from donors, parishioners, or project partners—is used to maximize the impact on the communities they serve.

Sr. Erica, John Mwaniki, and Rev. Fr. Dr. Sahaya Selvam, each with extensive experience in organizational management and community development, emphasized that financial literacy is not just a technical skill but a pastoral responsibility. Their training sessions combined practical tools with reflections on ethics and mission, ensuring that seminarians understood both the mechanics of financial management and the spiritual values that underpin it.

Participants appreciated the interactive approach, which included real-life case studies and opportunities to ask questions. Many noted that the training had opened their eyes to the importance of planning and accountability—skills that will serve them well in their future roles.

This initiative reflects DBDON’s commitment to supporting the formation of well-rounded leaders who are prepared to serve with integrity, compassion, and competence. As these seminarians continue their journey toward priesthood and brotherhood, they carry with them not just theological knowledge but also the practical skills needed to steward the resources of the Church effectively.
