Pre-school Education

Kenya has a large population of homeless street families. According to irinnews.org website, experts estimate that there are 250,000-300,000 children living and working on the streets, with more than 60,000 of them in Nairobi. Street children face endless cruelties. Their rights are violated many times by the adults who are meant to protect them. As a result, DBDON has set up Street Children program at Bosco Boys in Kuwinda where they are rehabilitated and taken to school.
Activities
– Provision of informal education and rehabilitation for boys at the rehabilitation center
– Provision of pre-school education to children from Kariua and Kuwinda slums

The overall goal of Bosco Boys Project is to provide a home, basic human needs and spiritual nourishment to needy children who formally lived or are currently living in the streets. Emphasis is laid on education because it is seen as a necessary tool in equipping street children to become self-reliant. It allows them to become independent citizens capable of making a positive change in society. Apart from education, we also endeavor to meet their basic needs such as food, clothing, shelter and above all a family atmosphere. This we do with the aim of providing an environment conducive to facilitating a positive change of behavior amongst former street children and mold them into good Christians and responsible citizens.

Bosco Boys Nairobi started in 1990 by putting up a simple rescue shelter in Kariua slum, on Kipande Road, Ngara Estate, Nairobi and few classes began. The children were provided with lunch but later on also temporary accommodation was provided for those who had no place to go.

The number of children who were attending lessons was 30 and the number increased gradually.
His Eminence Maurice Cardinal Otunga, later the Archbishop of Nairobi, donated a 13-acre piece of land to the Salesians in 1994 where the project of Bosco Boys (Kuwinda) now stands. The institution is situated in Kuwinda Estate, Langata sub-county in Nairobi City County.

Today, Bosco Boys has over 450 children and over 4000 children have been assisted in the centre and in their homes. We rescue and admit about 100 children in street situation every year.
